صَبَبتُI poured عَلىupon الأَميرِthe emir ثِيابَthe robes of مَدحيmy praise
فَكُلٌّso everyone قالَsaid أَحسَنَhe did well وَاِستَجاداand deemed it excellent
I poured upon the emir the robes of my praise.
I draped the Prince in the raiment of my praise,
So everyone said, “He has done well,” and deemed it excellent.
And all declared I had done well and found it exquisite.
وَلَولاand were it not for فَضلُهُhis excellence ماnot جادَexcelled شِعريmy verse
وَلاnor مَلَكَtook hold of الثَناpraise مِنّيfrom me القِياداthe reins
But for his excellence, my verse would not have excelled,
Yet were it not for his merit, my verse would not have flowed,
nor would praise have taken the reins from me.
Nor would praise have led me by the reins.
وَقالواand they said قَدindeed أَجَدتَyou have excelled فَقُلتُso I said إِنّيindeed I
رَأَيتُI saw الأَمرَthe subject أَمكَنَنيgave me scope فَزاداso it grew
They said, “You have excelled!” I replied, “Indeed, I
They said, "You have excelled," to which I answered, "I
saw that the subject gave me scope, and so my praise grew.”
Found the subject empowered me, and thus the poem soared."
