I describe a cock from the cocks of India,

With a noble uncle and a noble grandsire,

Of a lineage not traced to Maʿadd,

Nor of Qudaʿa, nor among the Azd.

With feathers spread and a powerful forearm,

Huge of talon and mighty of upper arm.

Then, when the cock later blundered,

And his star was in ill fortune, not good fortune,

    I saw him like a well-equipped horseman,

Strutting with the swagger of lions.

He wears him down with toil after toil,

    And weariness joined to exertion,

Until you see the cock before him like a leather strip,

    Pondering, honoring him with prostrations.

What a cock you are, reared in the cradle!

What a cock you are, reared in the cradle!
