لَعَمرُكَ ما أَبقى لَنا المَوتُ باقِياً
نَقَرَّwe find comfort بِهِin him عَيناًan eye غَداةَon the morning when نَأوبُwe return
نَقَرَّ بِهِ عَيناً غَداةَ نَأوبُ
By your life, Death has left us no survivor
By your life! Death did not spare
By your life, Death has left us no remaining kin,
In whom our eyes might find comfort on the morning we return.
The morning it struck the eye awake
To delight our eyes on the morning of return.
كَأَنّيas though I وَتَرتُI bereaved المَوتَDeath بِابنٍof a son أَفادَهُhe had gained him
كَأَنّي وَتَرتُ المَوتَ بِابنٍ أَفادَهُ
عَلىat حينَa time when حانَتhad arrived كَبرَةٌold age وَمَشيبُand gray hair
عَلى حينَ حانَت كَبرَةٌ وَمَشيبُ
As though I had bereaved Death of a son he had gained
As if I had bargained with death for a son
As if I had wronged Death regarding a son he destroyed,
Just when old age and gray hair had come upon him.
When decrepitude and gray hair beckoned
At the time when old age and gray hair had descended.
