لَعَمرُكَby your life ماnot غابَwas absent الأَمينُal-Amin (the Trustworthy) مُحَمَّدٌMuhammad

By your life, al-Amin Muhammad is not absent
By your life! The Trustworthy Muhammad was never absent
By your life, Al-Amin Muhammad is never absent
from the matter that concerns him when al-Fadl is present.
From any matter of importance that he witnessed excellence in.
From the matter that concerns him when Al-Fadl is present.
وَلَولاand were it not for مَواريثُhereditary rights الخِلافَةِthe caliphate أَنَّهاthat it

And were it not for the caliphate’s hereditary rights—that it
Had it not been for the inheritance of the Caliphate that it
And were it not for the inheritance of the Caliphate,
is his, not the other’s—there would be no distinction between them.
Was his more than any other's, there would have been no difference between them.
Which belongs to him alone, no distinction would divide them.
فَإِنfor if تَكُنِbe الأَجسامُthe bodies فيهاin them تَبايَنَتdiffered
فَقَولُهُماthen the speech of both قَولٌspeech وَفِعلُهُماand the action of both فِعلُaction
For even if their bodies are distinct,
Though their bodies differed, their words were one, and their deeds were one.
For though their bodies may stand apart and separate,
their speech is one, and their action is one.
I see excellence in worldly and religious matters combined in him,
Their speech is one speech, and their action one action.
أَرىI see الفَضلَal-Fadl لِلدُنياfor worldly life وَلِلدينِand for religion جامِعاًencompassing both
كَماjust as السَهمُthe arrow فيهِin it الريشُthe feathers وَالفَوقُand the nock وَالنَصلُand the arrowhead
I see al-Fadl uniting worldly life and religion,
As the arrow encompasses the feathers, the notch, and the arrowhead.
I see Al-Fadl uniting both the world and the faith,
just as an arrow has its feathers, nock, and arrowhead.
Just as the arrow joins the fletching, the notch, and the blade.
