وَسَلِّ عَنكَ الهَمَّ بِالكاسِ
Sip love undiluted with the drinker,
I perceive pure passion alongside the wine-drinker,
And banish care from yourself with the cup.
So sweep away your cares with the overflowing cup.

And take recklessness as your guide, and do not
Adopt recklessness as your guide, and never
Build structures except upon foundations.
Raise a building without a firm foundation.

في اللَوحِ مَكتوباً عَلى راسي
O the ill fortune of a heart whose ill fortune has ever been
Oh, the omen of a heart whose misfortune never ceases,
Written on the Tablet, upon my head!
Inscribed in the Tablet of Destiny upon my very existence.

في البُعدِ مِثلُ الحَجَرِ القاسي
My Lord has tormented me with one whose heart
My Lord has tormented me with one whose heart,
In separation is like hard stone:
In estrangement, becomes like unyielding stone.

The cruelest of charmers, slow of step,
A most unjust tempter, languid in his steps,
Supple as a bough, swaying gracefully.
Delicate of neck, swaying like a willow branch.

I spend my night and my day alike
I pass my night and my day alike,
Held in suspense by an obsessive thought of him.
Entangled with him by obsessive whispers.

He has departed, though I had no boon
He departed, and though I gained no favor from him,
To hope for from him, even in despair.
I still yearn for him, hoping against despair.
