لَقَدindeed جُنَّhas gone mad مَنhe who يَبكيweeps عَلىover رَسمِthe traces of مَنزِلٍa dwelling
لَقَد جُنَّ مَن يَبكي عَلى رَسمِ مَنزِلٍ
وَيَندُبُand laments أَطلالاًruins عَفَونَhave faded away بِجَروَلِat Jarwal
وَيَندُبُ أَطلالاً عَفَونَ بِجَروَلِ
Mad indeed is he who weeps over a dwelling’s traces
Truly mad is he who weeps over a campsite's traces,
and laments ruins effaced at Jarwal.
And laments for ruins obliterated on the stony ground.
فَإِنso if قيلَit is asked ماwhat يُبكيكَmakes you weep قالَhe says حَمامَةٌa dove

If asked, “What makes you weep?” he says, “A dove,
If asked, "What makes you weep?" he replies, "A dove,"
mourning a chick with a mourner’s cries,
"Wailing for her chick with the voice of a mourner,"

"And a tethering-stake secured by rock and stone."

But I weep for wine, for it
But I—I weep for the wine, solely because
is forbidden to us in the revealed Book.
It is forbidden to us in the revealed Book.

I shall drink it unmixed, even though it is forbidden,
I will drink it undiluted, even if it is banned,
for often have I indulged in what is unlawful.
For long have I committed what is not lawful.
