داوِCure يَحيىYahya مِنof خُمارِهhis hangover
داوِ يَحيى مِن خُمارِه
بِاِبنَةِwith the daughter of الدَنِّthe wine jar وَقارِهand its pitch
بِاِبنَةِ الدَنِّ وَقارِه
Cure Yahya of his hangover
Cure Yahya of his morning ailment,
with the daughter of the wine jar and its pitch—
With the daughter of the cask, sealed in pitch,
مِنof شَرابٍwine خُسرَوِيٍّKhosrowian
مِن شَرابٍ خُسرَوِيٍّ
ماnot تَعَنَّواthey took pains بِاِعتِصارِهover pressing it
ما تَعَنَّوا بِاِعتِصارِه
a Khosrowian wine
A vintage of Khosrow's royal stock,
they never toiled to press.
That exacted no toil in its pressing.
طَبَخَتهُcooked it الشَمسُthe sun لَمّاwhen
طَبَخَتهُ الشَمسُ لَمّا
بَخِلَwas stingy العِلجُthe foreigner بِنارِهwith his fire
بَخِلَ العِلجُ بِنارِه
The sun cooked it when
Matured by the sun, for the vintner
the foreigner begrudged his fire.
Was miserly with his fire's dressing.
فَأَتىthen came الدَهرُtime عَلَيهِupon it
فَأَتى الدَهرُ عَلَيهِ
غَيرَexcept for شَيءٍsomething فيat قَرارِهits bottom
غَيرَ شَيءٍ في قَرارِه
Then time consumed it,
Time has consumed all its substance,
save a little at its bottom.
Leaving naught but the essence inside,
فَتَجَلَّتthen it unveiled itself عَنrevealing شِهابٍa shooting star
فَتَجَلَّت عَن شِهابٍ
يَتَرامىshooting forth بِشَرارِهwith its sparks
يَتَرامى بِشَرارِه
Then it shone forth—a shooting star,
Till it revealed itself as a meteor,
scattering its sparks.
Casting sparks far and wide.
رَكَدَlay still الدَهرُtime عَلَيهِover it
رَكَدَ الدَهرُ عَلَيهِ
فَكَفىso it sufficed for ضَوءَthe light of نَهارِهits day
فَكَفى ضَوءَ نَهارِه
Time lay still over it,
The ages settled still upon it,
so it sufficed in place of daylight.
Sufficing for the light of the day.
وَنَديميand my drinking companion كُلُّevery خِرقٍgallant man
وَنَديمي كُلُّ خِرقٍ
زانَهُadorned him عِتقُthe nobility of نِجارِهhis lineage
زانَهُ عِتقُ نِجارِه
And every gallant is my drinking companion,
My companion is every noble youth,
graced by the nobility of his lineage.
Adorned by a lineage ancient and gay.
وَغَزالٍand a gazelle تَشرَهُyearns النَفthe soul (first part)
وَغَزالٍ تَشرَهُ النَف
سُ(completes 'the soul') إِلىto حَلِّuntying إِزارِهhis waistcloth
سُ إِلى حَلِّ إِزارِه
And a gazelle—the soul yearns
And a gazelle for whom the soul hungers,
to untie his waistcloth.
To loosen the sash at his waist,
بَسَطَتهُmade him unreserved سَورَةُthe surge of الراthe wine (first part)
بَسَطَتهُ سَورَةُ الرا
حِ(completes 'the wine') لَناwith us بَعدَafter اِزوِرارِهhis aloofness
حِ لَنا بَعدَ اِزوِرارِه
The wine's surge made him unreserved
The wine's power made him yield to us,
with us, after his aloofness.
After he had turned away in haste.
فَأَطَفناso we circled بِنَواحيaround the sides of
فَأَطَفنا بِنَواحي
هِhim وَلَمand did not نَعرِضapproach لِدارِهto his dwelling
هِ وَلَم نَعرِض لِدارِه
So we circled round his outskirts,
So we circled around his borders,
but did not approach his dwelling.
But trespassed not on his domain.
