اِسقِيانيgive me drink, you two الحَرامَthe forbidden قَبلَbefore الحَلالِthe lawful
وَدَعانيand spare me, you two مِنfrom دارِسِeffaced الأَطلالِthe ruins
Give me the forbidden before the lawful, you two;
Pour for me the forbidden draught before the lawful,
and spare me the effaced ruins.
And spare me the talk of effaced ruins.
إِنَّماonly العَيشُlife فيin مُباكَرَةِearly-morning drinking of الخَمthe wine (continued on the next line)
رِcompletion of 'wine' وَسُكرٍand drunkenness يَدومُendures فيin كُلِّevery حالِcircumstance
True life lies only in drinking wine at dawn,
For true life lies in the early pursuit of wine,
and in drunkenness that endures in every circumstance.
And an intoxication that endures through every state.
وَتَمامُand the fullness السُرورِof joy فيهاin it بِساقٍwith a cupbearer
حَسَنِhandsome الوَجهِof face مُستَنيرِradiant الجَمالِin beauty
And joy in it is complete with a cupbearer,
The perfection of its joy requires a cupbearer,
handsome of face, radiant in beauty.
Handsome of face, radiant in beauty.
لَوif بَداappeared وَجهُهُhis face إِذاwhen الشَمسُthe sun دارَتwheeled round
قُلتَyou would say نورانِtwo lights صُوِّراwere fashioned, both مِنfrom مِثالِa model
Were his face to appear as the sun wheeled round,
If his face were to appear as the sun circled above,
you would say: two lights fashioned from one model.
You would say: two lights fashioned from a single mold.
فَاِسقِيانيso give me drink, you two رَقيقَةَthin السِربالِthe robe
تُعدِمانيyou two deprive me of مَعارِفَknowledge الأَطلالِthe ruins
So give me the thin-robed wine,
So pour me the wine of delicate raiment,
and rob me of my knowledge of the ruins.
That obliterates from me all memory of the ruins.
