كَمhow many لَيلَةٍa night قَدindeed بُتُّI spent the night أَلهوreveling بِهاin it
كَم لَيلَةٍ قَد بُتُّ أَلهو بِها
لَوif only دامَlasted ذاكَthat اللَهوُrevelry لِلّاهيfor the reveler
لَو دامَ ذاكَ اللَهوُ لِلّاهي
How many a night have I spent in revelry!
How many a night have I passed in revelry,
If only that revelry lasted for the reveler!
If only that diversion had lasted for the player;
حَرَّمَهاforbade it اللَهُGod وَحَلَّلتُهاand I deemed it lawful
حَرَّمَها اللَهُ وَحَلَّلتُها
فَكَيفَso how بِالعَفوِwith forgiveness مِنَfrom اللَهِGod
فَكَيفَ بِالعَفوِ مِنَ اللَهِ
God forbade it, and I deemed it lawful;
God forbade it, yet I deemed it lawful;
So what of forgiveness from God?
So how, then, shall I find pardon from God?
