O Abū al-ʿAbbās, cease your reproach,
O Abu al-Abbas, refrain from your blame,
and leave off delving so deeply into talk.
And leave aside deep speech and wordy game.

أقامَhas brought on قيامتيmy Day of Judgment شهرُthe month of الصيامfasting
For, by the life of the one I love and you love,
For by the life of the one we both adore,
the month of fasting has brought my Day of Judgment upon me.
The Month of Fasting has shaken me to the core.
أماتَhas killed مجانتيmy wantonness وأبادَand destroyed لهويmy pleasures
وعطّلand left idle راحتيّmy two palms منof المُدامwine
It has killed my wantonness and destroyed my pleasures,
It killed my wanton wit, destroyed my play,
and left both my palms idle, without wine.
And swept the wine-cup from my palms away.

And if you saw me beside the pillars,
If you could see me where the pillars rise,
roaming about at the imam’s call to prayer,
Pacing while the Imam's call fills the skies,

you would know that I had tormented a soul
You’d know I have tormented a soul within,
whose habits and customs lie in what is forbidden.
Marked by the habits and traces of sin.

ومنand of عضّbiting ورشفٍand sipping والتثامِand kissing on the lips
For how often there I have kissed a cheek,
For O how many cheeks I’ve kissed of old,
and bitten, sipped, and pressed lips to lips!
With bites and sips and embraces bold.
