وَمُحَكَّمٍand one given authority فيin مُهجَتيmy heart's blood
وَالجورُand injustice فيin أَحكامِهِhis judgments
And one given sway over my heart,
With settled principles in my conscience
One who holds authority over my very soul,
And injustice lies in his judgments.
Though injustice governs his judgments
Yet whose decrees are fraught with tyranny;
قَوسُbow المَناياdeaths طَرفُهُhis eye
وَاللَحظُand glances جُلُّmost of سِهامِهِhis arrows
His eye is the bow of death,
Death's bow aimed, the moment his arrow
His glance is the bow of destined death,
And glances make up most of his arrows.
While the glance, the sum of its missiles
And his looks constitute the bulk of its arrows.
إِنّيindeed I لَأَحسُدُI surely envy مَنwhoever يُمَتdelights (first fragment of a split verb)
تِعُdelights (final fragment of the split verb) سَمعَهُhis hearing بِكَلامِهِwith his words
Indeed, I envy whoever delights
I do envy he whose hearing feasts
Truly, I envy the one who delights
His hearing with his words,
On his words and verses' rhythms
His hearing with the sound of his words,
وَتَلَذَّذَتand found delight أَجفانُهُhis eyelids
بِقُعودِهِin his sitting وَقِيامِهِand his standing
And whose eyelids have found delight
And whose eyes delight to witness him
And whose eyelids find sweet pleasure
In his sitting and his standing.
Sitting or standing, however he is
In watching him sit and rise.
أَصبَحتُI have come to مِنfrom حُبّيmy love لَهُfor him
أَلهوI amuse myself بِوَجهِwith the face of غُلامِهِhis boy
Out of my love for him, I have come
For my love of him, I’ve come to be
I have become, out of my love for him,
To take pleasure in his boy's face.
Infatuated with his face, his beauty
Content to find solace in the face of his page.
