قَلائِصَ قَد وُنينَ مِنَ السِفارِ
And at night I halted at a wine seller's,
To a wine-merchant I descended by night,
with young she-camels wearied by travel.
With young camels weary from the journey's toll.
فَجَمجَمَthen he muttered وَالكَرىand sleep فيin مِقلَتَيهِhis two eyes
فَجَمجَمَ وَالكَرى في مِقلَتَيهِ
كَمَخمورٍlike a hungover man شَكاcomplained of أَلَمَthe pain of الخُمارِthe hangover
كَمَخمورٍ شَكا أَلَمَ الخُمارِ
Then he muttered, with sleep in his eyes,
He muttered, with sleep still heavy in his eyes,
like a man with a hangover complaining of its pain:
Like a drunkard complaining of a hangover's ache.

"Tell me how you came into my private quarters,
"Explain to me," he said, "how you reached my sanctuary,
while the night's star wears pitch as kohl?"
When the star of night is blackened as if with pitch?"
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him تَرَفَّقbe gentle بيwith me فَإِنّيfor indeed I

So I said to him, "Be gentle with me, for I
I replied, "Be gentle with me, for I...
saw dawn through the gaps in the houses."
...glimpsed the dawn through the gaps of your dwelling."

His answer was: "Dawn?
His answer was to ask: "Dawn?"
And there is no dawn but the light of wine."
"There is no dawn here but the light of the wine."

And he rose, went to the wine, and sealed its mouth,
He rose to the wine-jar and sealed its mouth,
and night returned, black-robed.
And the night returned, wearing its cloak of black.

Then he released its flow into the depth of a cup,

With raised banners and short battle-tunics.
