وَخَمّارٍand a wine-seller حَطَطتُI set down إِلَيهِto him رَحليmy saddle
فَقامَthen he rose مُرَنَّحاًreeling ثَمِلاًdrunk يَميلُswaying
And at a wine-seller's I set down my saddle.
My companion, burdened and leaning, I directed my camel towards him,
And many a vintner with whom I settled my journey,
Then he rose, reeling, drunk and swaying.
He stood swaying, heavily leaning to one side.
Who rose swaying, staggering in his drunkenness.
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him إتَّئِدهُِtake it slowly فَالرِفقُfor gentleness يُمنٌgood fortune
وَلَمand did not يَظفَرsucceed بِحاجَتِهِin his aim العَجولُthe hasty man
So I said to him, 'Take it slowly, for gentleness brings good fortune;
I said to him: "Rest yourself, for gentleness brings blessings,
I said to him, "Go gently, for gentleness is a blessing,
And the hasty man does not attain his desire.'
While the hasty attain not their desire."
And the hasty man never attains his desire."
فَرَدَّso he replied عَلَيَّto me رَدَّthe reply of فَتىًa young man أَديبٍcultured
خَليليmy friend لَستُI am not أَجهَلُignorant of ماwhat تَقولُyou say
So he answered me with a cultured youth's reply:
He answered me with the reply of a cultured youth:
He answered me with the reply of a cultured youth:
'My friend, I am not ignorant of what you say.'
"My friend, I am not ignorant of what you say."
"My friend, I am not ignorant of what you say."
وَقامَand he went إِلىto الَّتيthe one that عَكَفَتhad lingered عَلَيهاover it
بَناتُthe daughters of الدَهرِTime وَالزَمَنِand time الطَويلُlong
And he went to the jar over which had lingered
And he went to her, whom the daughters of time and the long eras
Then he moved toward that vessel over which
The daughters of Time and the long years.
Had busied themselves with.
The daughters of time and long ages had lingered.
فَوَدَّجَso he opened a vein in خَصرَهاher waist فَبَداthen appeared لِسانٌa tongue
كَأَنَّas though لُعابَهُits saliva عَلَقٌthick blood يَسيلُflowing
So he opened a vein in her waist, and a tongue appeared,
He clasped her waist, and there appeared a tongue,
He pierced its waist, and a tongue appeared,
As though its saliva were thick blood flowing,
As if its saliva were dripping honey.
As if its spittle were flowing crimson blood,
بِكَفِّin the hand of مُزَنَّرٍa girdled man أَعلاهُhis upper body غُصنٌa branch
وَأَسفَلُand below خَصرِهِhis waist رِدفٌa rump ثَقيلُheavy
In the hand of a girdled man, his upper body a branch,
With a bejeweled hand, above which was a branch,
In the hand of a sash-wearer whose upper body is a slender bough,
And below his waist, a heavy rump.
And below her waist was a heavy flank.
While below his waist lies a heavy weight.
أَقولُI say وَقَدand already بَداappeared لِلصُبحِof dawn نَجمٌa star
خَليلِيَmy friend إِنَّindeed فِعلَكَyour action بيtoward me جَميلُkind
I say, as a star of dawn appears:
I say, as the morning star appeared to the dawn:
I said, when the star of morning had appeared:
'My friend, your treatment of me is indeed kind.
"My friend, your deed towards me is beautiful."
"My friend, your deed toward me is gracious.
أَرِحنيgive me rest قَدalready تَرَفَّعَتِhas risen high الثُرَيّاthe Pleiades
وَغالَتand carried off جُنحَthe darkness of لَيليmy night عَنكَaway from you غولُa ghoul
Let me rest; the Pleiades have risen high,
"Set me at ease, for the Pleiades have risen high
Pour me relief, for the Pleiades have risen high,
And a ghoul has carried my night's darkness away from you.'
And the wings of my night have flown far from you."
And a ghoul has snatched the darkness of my night away from you."
فَقالَthen he said الآنَnow تَأمُرُنيyou command me بِهَذاto do this
وَقَدand already عَلِقَتhas clung to مَفاصِلِيَmy joints الشَمولُthe wine
Then he said, 'Now you command me to do this,
He said: "Now you command me this,
He said, "Is it now that you command me to do this,
When wine has already taken hold of my joints?'
When my joints have been seized by paralysis."
When the wine has already seized my every joint?"
