And a young gazelle whose eyes bewitch;
And the fair one enchants his eyes,
And a young gazelle whose eyes enchant,
His lower half draws his upper half.
His lower half pulls his upper half.
His lower half pulls upon his upper half,
يَنظُرُgazes مَولاهُhis master إِلىat وَجهِهِhis face
ياoh لَيتَنيif only I were عَينٌan eye لِمَولاهُfor his master
His master gazes at his face.
His master looks upon his face -
His master gazes upon his face,
Oh, if only I were an eye for his master!
Would that I were an eye of my master!
Oh, how I wish I were an eye for his master!
أَعَرتُهُI lent him روحيmy soul وَقَلبيand my heart فَقَدand indeed
عَيِيتُI grew weary مِمّاfrom what أَتَقاضاهُI demand repayment from him
I lent him my soul and my heart, and have
I offered him my soul and heart, for I grew
I lent him my soul and my heart, for indeed
grown weary of demanding repayment from him.
Weary of unfulfilled longing.
I have grown weary of demanding their return,
وَلَوand if رَآنيhe saw me سَيّئاًat fault فيin الهَوىlove
لَقالَthen he would say ليto me أَبعَدَكَmay he banish you اللَهُGod
And if he saw me at fault in love,
And if he saw me as unworthy in passion,
And were he to see me wretched in passion,
He would say to me, "May God banish you!"
He would say to me "May God keep you far!"
He would say to me: "May God banish you."
