وعاذلةٍand a reproachful woman تعيبُfinds fault with عليَّin me عاديmy habits
فقلتُso I said لهاto her ضلَلتُI strayed from طريقَthe path of عاديmy habits
And a reproachful woman finds fault with my habits.
And the moralizer faulting me, customary,
And a scolding woman who finds fault with my ways,
So I told her: I have strayed from my accustomed path.
So I said to her, "I lost a customary path."
To whom I said: I have strayed from the path of convention,
رجعتُI returned إلىto الخسارةِloss والفسادِand corruption
ولستُand I am not بسالكٍone who walks سُبُلَthe paths of الرشادright guidance
I have returned to loss and corruption,
I returned to loss and corruption,
I have returned to loss and depravity,
And I do not walk the paths of right guidance.
And I'm not one who takes the paths to righteousness.
And I am not one to walk the roads of righteousness.
وأقسمُand I swear لاnot أجيبُI respond إلىto ملامٍreproach
ولوand even if صمّمتُI were deafened منby صوتِthe voice of المناديthe caller
And I swear I shall not heed reproach,
I swear I won't respond to blame,
I swear I will not answer to any blame,
Even if the caller's voice were to deafen me.
Even if I intended the caller's voice.
Even if the crier's voice were to strike me deaf.

وقصدَand undertaking الحجّthe pilgrimage أوor قصدَundertaking الجهادِjihad
And what have I to do with prayer and a month's fasting,
What is prayer or fasting a month to me?
What have I to do with prayer or the fasting of a month,
And undertaking the pilgrimage or undertaking jihad?
Or striving on pilgrimage or striving in jihad?
Or the intent of Pilgrimage or the waging of Holy War?
سأخلعُI shall cast off ماas long as حييتُI live عذارَthe bridle of رشديmy good sense
وألبسُand I don جامحاًheadstrong عذرَthe bridles of الفسادcorruption
I shall cast off the bridle of my good sense as long as I live,
I will remove the finery of my righteousness, for as long as I live,
As long as I live, I shall cast off the bridle of reason,
And, headstrong, don the bridles of corruption.
And wear the madness of corruption.
And, unruled, wear the halter of corruption.
وأعصيand I disobey عاذليmy reproacher سرّاًsecretly وجهراًand openly
وأجعلand I make جاعةَthe hunger of الشطّارthe rogues زاديmy provisions
And I disobey my reproacher, secretly and openly,
And I disobey my moralizer secretly and openly,
I disobey my censurer in secret and in public,
And I make the rogues' hunger my provisions.
And I take the rabble as my provision.
And make the company of rogues my daily bread.
وآخذand I embark فيon مذاهبthe ways of قومٍthe people of لوطٍLot
ولاnor آلوI fall short تمرّدَthe rebellion of قومِthe people of عادِʿĀd
And I take to the ways of the people of Lot,
And I follow the ways of the people of Lot,
I adopt the doctrines of the people of Lot,
Nor will I fall short of the people of ʿĀd in rebellion.
And I do not refrain from the rebellion of the people of A'd.
And spare no effort in the rebellion of the people of 'Ad.
