And a charmer with a dewy gaze
With a moist, tender glance,
And oh, what a charmer with a languid gaze,
smiles, revealing sweet, finely notched teeth.
She laughs more sweetly than pure wine.
Who smiles revealing teeth both sweet and glistening,

I sat alone with him; there was no
I was alone with her in a gathering
I secluded myself with him in a gathering where

Where none were with us but God.
There was no third amongst us but the Lord.
فَقالَthen he said ليto me وَالكَفُّand the hand فيin كَفِّهِhis hand
بَعدَafter التَجَنّيthe unjust accusations مِنهُfrom him وَالعَتبِand the reproach
Then he said to me, with my hand in his,
She said, her palm in my palm,
He spoke to me, while my hand lay in his,
after his unjust accusations and reproaches:
After withdrawing from me in displeasure:
After his feigned tyranny and reproach:
تُحِبُّنيdo you love me? قُلتُI said مُجيباًreplying لَهُto him
وَفَوقَand beyond ماwhat تَرجوyou hope for مِنَof الحُبِّlove
‘Do you love me?’ I said in reply to him:
"Do you love me?" I answered her:
"Do you love me?" I said, answering him,
‘And more than you hope for in love.’
"More than you could wish for in love."
"Yes, and beyond whatever love you might hope for."
قالَhe said فَتَصبوso you yearn قُلتُI said ياO سَيِّديmy master
وَأَيُّand what شَيءٍthing فيكَin you لاdoes not يُصبيarouse desire
He said, ‘So you yearn?’ I said, ‘My master,
She said, "Then pine away." I said, "My lady,
He said, "Are you captivated?" I said, "O my master,
and what in you does not kindle desire?’
What is there in you that would not make one pine?"
And is there anything about you that does not captivate?"
قالَhe said اِتَّقِfear اللَهَGod وَدَعand abandon ذاthis الهَوىpassion
فَقُلتُso I said إِنif طاوَعَنيobeys me قَلبيmy heart
He said, ‘Fear God, and forsake this passion.’
She said, "Fear God, and leave this passion."
He said, "Fear God and abandon this passion,"
So I said, ‘If my heart obeys me.’
I said, "If only my heart would obey me."
I replied, "If only my heart would obey me."
