باتَspent the night عَلِيٌّAli وَأَباتَand made spend the night صَحبَهhis companions
باتَ عَلِيٌّ وَأَباتَ صَحبَه
فيin سَوأَةٍa shameful deed أَكثَرَincreased مِنهاbecause of it عَتبَهreproach against him
في سَوأَةٍ أَكثَرَ مِنها عَتبَه
Ali spent the night and had his companions spend it
Ali stayed up while his companions slept
Ali spent the night, and kept his comrades too,
In a shameful deed that increased the reproach against him,
In a place with more dust than a trail
In a shameful vice that garnered heavy blame,
بِشادِنٍwith a young gazelle لاnot يَسأَمونَthey tire of قُربَهhis nearness
بِشادِنٍ لا يَسأَمونَ قُربَه
قَدindeed جَمَعواthey brought together آذانَهُhis ears وَعَقبَهand his heel
قَد جَمَعوا آذانَهُ وَعَقبَه
With a young gazelle whose company they never tire of.
With warriors who do not tire of his company
With a young gazelle whose nearness never tires;
They have brought his ears and his heel together.
They have gathered to listen and obey
They gathered up his ears to meet his heels.
لَمdid not يَخشَfear فيin شَهرِthe month of الصِيامِfasting رَبَّهhis Lord
لَم يَخشَ في شَهرِ الصِيامِ رَبَّه
ياO رَبَّناour Lord لاdo not تَغفِرَنَّforgive (emphatic) ذَنبَهhis sin
يا رَبَّنا لا تَغفِرَنَّ ذَنبَه
He did not fear his Lord in the month of fasting.
He did not fear his Lord in the fasting month
He feared not his Lord in the month of the Fast—
O our Lord, never forgive his sin!
Oh Lord do not forgive his sins
O Lord of ours, do not forgive his sin!
