ياAh! بِأَبيmay my father be ransom ظَبيٌa gazelle بِهِin him مَسحَةٌa touch of beauty
قَدindeed شَبَّgrew up فيin بَغدادَBaghdad مَأواهُhis home
Ah, may my father be ransom for a gazelle touched with beauty!
O my father's gazelle, with beautiful markings,
May my father be ransomed for a gazelle possessing a touch of magic,
He has grown up in Baghdad, his home.
Who grew up in Baghdad, his home,
Who grew to maturity with Baghdad as his abode.
رُبّيwas reared بِقَصرِin the palace of الخُلدِal-Khuld فيin نِعمَةٍprosperity
حَيّاهُhonored him بِالنِعمَةِwith bounty مَولاهُhis master
He was reared in al-Khuld Palace amid plenty;
My Lord granted him blessings in the eternal palace,
He was reared in the Palace of Eternity amidst bliss,
His master honored him with bounty.
His Master blessed him with favor,
Where his master bestowed upon him every favor.
أَغفَلَهُoverlooked him البَوّابُthe doorkeeper مِنthrough شِقوَتيmy misfortune
فَجاءَنيso he came to me يَضحَكُlaughing عِطفاهُhis two sides
The doorkeeper overlooked him, to my misfortune,
The gatekeeper was heedless of my misery,
The gatekeeper lost sight of him—to my misfortune—
So he came to me, his sides laughing.
So he came to me, smiling gently,
So he came to me, his graceful sides swaying with mirth.
وَمَرَّand he passed لِلحينِto bring ruin بِناby us ضَحوَةًat midmorning
فَصادَthen captured مِنّيfrom me القَلبَthe heart عَيناهُhis two eyes
And, to my undoing, he passed by us at midmorning;
And for a while he passed by me charmingly,
He passed by us in the forenoon, bringing my doom,
Then his eyes snared my heart.
So my heart was pierced by his eyes,
For his eyes hunted down my heart.
أَسقَمَsickened جِسميmy body وَبَرىand wore away مُهجَتيmy lifeblood
وَسَلَّand drew out مِنّيfrom me الروحَthe soul صُدغاهُhis two temple-locks
He sickened my body and sapped my lifeblood,
My body grew sick and my brain confused,
He sickened my body and whittled away my lifeblood,
And his temple-locks drew the soul from me.
And my soul melted from his temple's blow,
And the locks upon his temples drew out my spirit.
فَصُرتُso I became لِلشَقوَةِto misery فيin فَخِّهِhis snare
كَطائِرٍlike a bird قُصَّwere clipped جَناحاهُits two wings
So, to my misery, I ended up in his snare,
So I became trapped in misery,
So I have become, through misery, caught in his snare,
Like a bird whose wings have been clipped.
Like a bird whose wings are cut off.
Like a bird whose wings have been clipped.
