أَجَبتُI answered إِلىto الصَبابَةِardent love مَنwhoever دَعانيcalled me

وَخالَفتُand I defied الَّذيthe one who عَنهاfrom it نَهانيforbade me
I answered whoever called me to ardent love,
I yielded to the one who called me to revelry
I answered the call of he who summoned me to yearning,
And defied the one who forbade me from it.
And opposed the one who prohibited me from it
And defied the one who sought to forbid me its path.

إِذاwhen اللاحيthe reproacher عَلىfor حُبٍّlove لَحانيreproached me
And none as faithful as I has been seen in love,
And none is as faithful in love as I
No lover more loyal than I has ever been seen,
When the reproacher chides me for loving.
If the glances of the beloved incline towards my love
Even when the critic heaped blame upon my passion.
أَطَعتُI obeyed لِشَقوَتيto my misfortune قَلباًa heart غَوِيّاًwayward

To my misfortune, I obeyed a wayward heart,
I obeyed a wanton heart
To my own misery, I obeyed a heart led astray,
Its reins cast off in pursuit of pleasures.
To desires let loose without restraint
Charging toward pleasures with a loosened rein.

It severs ties with everyone who desires union with me,
It contends with all who seek my union
It severs ties with all who desire my union,
And favors with its love whoever has shunned me.
And prefers with love those who spurned me
Yet favors with affection the one who casts me aside.

And wherever it alights, it loves none but
And it does not love where it is hurt
It falls in love, wherever it alights, with none but
The gazelles of human company, or the houris of Paradise.
Except the gentle companions or the houri of paradise
The gazelles of the gathering or the houris of Paradise.
يُكَلِّفُنيburdens me with هَوىlove for مَنone who لاnot يُباليcares

لَوَif اِنَّthat المَوتَdeath عاقَصَنيstruck me down suddenly مَكانيwhere I stand
It burdens me with love for one who would not care
The passion of one who does not care
It burdens me with passion for one who would not care
If death suddenly struck me down where I stood.
Compels me even if death severs my ties
If death were to strike me down where I stand.
يُعَرِّضُنيexposes me لِفِتنَةِto the trial of كُلِّevery أَمرٍaffair
وَيَحمِلُنيand carries me عَلىupon مِثلِthe like of السِنانِthe spearpoint
It exposes me to the trials of every affair,
It exposes me to the trial of every matter
It exposes me to the torment of every trial,
And carries me as if upon a spear's point.
And makes me bear the likes of spears
And bears me upon the sharp point of a spear.
