تَناوَمتُI feigned sleep جُهديwith all my effort فَلَمyet did not أَرقُدِfall asleep
وَنامَand slept الخَلِيُّthe carefree one وَلَمand did not يَسهَدِlie awake
I feigned sleep with all my might, yet did not fall asleep.
I strove to feign sleep, yet I could not slumber,
And the carefree one slept and did not lie awake.
While the carefree one slept, untouched by wakefulness.
أُقَلِّبُI turn طَرفاًa gaze كَليلَweary اللِحاظِthe glances
وَإِنand even if قَرَّit rests عَنfrom جَسَدٍa body مُقصَدِstruck down
I turn my gaze, its glances weary,
I turn about a gaze weary in its glancing,
Even if it rests, it comes from a body struck down.
Though it settles in a body stricken with pain.
وَأَنهَضُand I rise فيamid طَرَباتٍfits of agitation تَهيجُthat surge
وَأُلزِمُand I press طَوراًat times فُؤاديmy heart يَديmy hand
And I rise amid surging fits of agitation,
I rise amidst surging emotions that rage within,
And at times I press my hand to my heart.
And at times, I press my hand against my heart.
