ياO حَبَّذاhow lovely لَيلَةٌa night نَعِمتُI delighted بِهاin it
يا حَبَّذا لَيلَةٌ نَعِمتُ بِها
أَشرَبُI drink فَضلَwhat remains of الحَبيبِthe beloved فيin القَدَحِthe cup
أَشرَبُ فَضلَ الحَبيبِ في القَدَحِ
Ah, how lovely a night I enjoyed,
Oh blessed night when with him I did stay
Oh, how lovely was a night in which I found bliss,
drinking what my beloved had left in the cup.
I drank the dregs from my lover's cup
Drinking the beloved's remainder from the cup,
سَأَلتُهُI asked him قُبلَةًa kiss فَجادَso he was generous بِهاwith it
سَأَلتُهُ قُبلَةً فَجادَ بِها
فَلَمand did not أُصَدَّقI believe بِهاin it مِنَfrom الفَرَحِjoy
فَلَم أُصَدَّق بِها مِنَ الفَرَحِ
I asked him for a kiss, and he freely gave it;
I asked of him a kiss, he gave away
I asked him for a kiss, and he generously granted it,
and I could not believe it for joy.
In disbelief of joy I woke up
And from my sheer joy, I could not believe it true.
