    O reproacher, stop reproaching me,

And describing the wilderness and the desert,

    وَلاقِها بِأَصدَقِ النِيّاتِ

    Effaced and uneffaced;

And meet her with the sincerest intentions,

Until you meet the master of tall vines,

    Cut for firewood, not green—

    Kisra’s daughters—truly the finest daughters,

Brought from Hit and from Anat,

    Veiled, not openly displayed,

Except when brought forth in bowls,

    فَسَمُّها بِالشَيخِ لا الفَتاةِ

    For the early-coming, willing suitor.

    So call her the old man, not the maiden;

Then mount her early in the morning,

And draw from her the lifeblood of life,

From knots that kept faith with one who had an appointed time,

Into pitchers fitted with straining cloths,

Leaning toward the cups, bowing low.

So when she is mixed, for all her faults,

With cold water from the Euphrates,

You imagine within her the tongues of snakes,

Or fires blazing along the edges.

I would ransom you! Take her from my hand, and give in turn.

Love of boyish girls has tormented me,

    With temple-locks curled like scorpions,

    Well-proportioned in figure, slender-waisted,

    Walking in buttoned tunics,

    Suited to sodomites and fornicators.

By describing them I allude to my mistress,

She in whose hand is my life.

She in whose hand is my life.
