Drink among the roses in April, taking your morning draught,
Drink the rose wine in April while happy
Drink to the morning amidst the roses of April,
of Qutrabbul wine, red as kādhi.
Of the red wine of Qutrabbul as if burning
From the red wine of Qutrabbul, vivid as the pandanus bloom.

Cast off your bridle; do no virtuous deed
Take off your excuse, you will not come with goodness
Cast off your bridle of shame and perform no righteous deed,
so long as you dwell in Baghdad’s environs.
As long as you reside in the suburbs of Baghdad
So long as you make your home in the districts of Baghdad.

Pamper your youth with aged wine, and do not
Make good your youth with old wine and do not
Indulge your youth with vintage wine, and never
drink a honey brew as the inexperienced do.
Drink as the ignorant ones drink from illusion
Sip as the novices do from mild honeyed drafts.
صِلmaintain ties with مَنwhoever صَفَتis pure لَكَfor you فيin الدُنياthis world مَوَدَّتُهُhis affection

Keep ties with one whose affection for you in this world is pure,
Connect whoever's affection lasted for you in life
Cling to the one whose affection for you is pure in this world,
and do not bind friendship’s cord to one who severs ties.
And do not connect with brotherhood a flimsy rope
But do not knot the rope of brotherhood with one who severs ties;

وَلَيسَand he is not مِنكَfrom you إِذاwhen تُثريyou grow wealthy بِمُعتاذِa seeker of refuge
وَلَيسَ مِنكَ إِذا تُثري بِمُعتاذِ
He seeks refuge in God if you become destitute,
He seeks refuge in Allah if you wake up devoid
He who seeks refuge in God should you fall into poverty,
yet seeks no refuge from you when you grow wealthy.
And it is not from you when you excuse with an excuse
Yet seeks no protection from you when you abound in wealth.
