عَصَيتُI disobeyed فيin السُكرِdrunkenness مَنwhoever لَحانيreproached me
وَخانَنيand betrayed me حادِثُthe turn الزَمانِof time
In drunkenness, I defied whoever reproached me,
I disobeyed the one who censured me regarding my intoxication,
And the turn of time betrayed me.
And the vicissitudes of time betrayed me.
لَمّاwhen تَمادَيتُI persisted فيin مُجونٍdebauchery
أَلقىit cast عَلىupon غارِبيmy withers عِنانيmy reins
When I went ever further in debauchery,
When I persisted in my shameless indulgence,
It cast my reins upon my withers.
Time cast my reins upon my withers [leaving me to roam free].
أَبتَدِعُI devise الكَسبَacquisition لِلمَعانيfor meanings
بِأَوجُهٍthrough faces عَفَّةٍchaste حِسانِlovely
I devise ways of acquiring meanings
Innovating new ways to acquire refined meanings
Through chaste and lovely faces.
Through faces that are chaste and beautiful.
ماnot مَرَّpassed يَومٌa day وَلَيسَand there was not عِنديwith me
مِنamong طُرَفِthe delights اللَهوِof diversion فَصلَتانِtwo kinds
No day passed without my having
No day has passed without my possessing
Two choice kinds of diversion:
Two distinct portions from the novelties of pleasure:
كَأسُa cup رَحيقٍof pure wine وَوَجهُand a face ظَبيٍof a gazelle
تَضِلُّlose their way فيin حُسنِهِhis beauty المَعانيmeanings
A cup of pure wine and a gazelle’s face—
A cup of pure nectar and the face of a gazelle
Meanings lose their way in his beauty.
In whose beauty all descriptions go astray.
نِلتُI gained لَذيذَthe sweetness الحَرامِof the forbidden مِنهُfrom him
وَنالَهُand gained it الناسُthe people بِالأَمانيthrough wishes
From him I gained the sweetness of the forbidden,
I attained the delicious forbidden fruit from him,
And others gained it through wishes.
While others attained him only in their wishes.
كَمmany a لَذَّةٍpleasure قُلتُI said قَدalready وَعاهاrecorded it
فيin وَسَطِthe middle اللَوحِof the tablet حافِظانِtwo guardians
Many a pleasure, I said, had been recorded
How many a pleasure, I said, has been recorded
In the middle of the tablet by two guardians.
In the center of the Tablet by the two Guardian Angels.
