Bring forth the wine, and give me wine to drink.
Bring some wine, then give me wine to drink.
Do you not see how the cock has crowed?
Do you not see how the rooster has already crowed?
وَأَدبَرَand retreated اللَيلُthe night فيin مُعَسكَرِهِits encampment
مُنصَرِفاًdeparting وَالصَباحُand dawn قَدalready لاحاappeared
Night has turned away within its encampment,
And night has retreated in its encampment,
departing, while morning has shone forth.
departing, while dawn has already appeared.
فَاِستَعمِلِso put to use الكَأسَthe cup وَاِسقِنيand give me to drink بِكراًvirgin wine
إِنّيindeed I إِلَيهاfor it أَصبَحتُI have entered the morning مُرتاحاyearning
So put the cup to use, and give me virgin wine to drink;
So put the cup to use, and give me virgin wine;
for I awoke this morning eager for it.
for at dawn I find myself yearning for it.
كَأساًa cup دِهاقاًbrimming صِرفاًunmixed كَأَنَّas though بِهاin it
إِلىtoward فَمِthe mouth الشارِبينَthe drinkers مِصباحاa lamp
A brimming, unmixed cup—as though it carried
A brimming cup of unmixed wine, as though within it
a lamp toward the mouths of those who drink.
a lamp shone toward the drinkers' mouths.
نُؤتىwe are supplied بِهاwith it كَالخَلوقِlike saffron perfume فيin قَدَحٍa goblet

It is brought to us like khalūq perfume in a goblet—
It is brought to us, like saffron perfume, in a goblet—
the fragrance of khalūq mingled with apple—
the scent of saffron perfume has mingled with apples—
مِنfrom كَفِّthe palm قِبطِيَّةٍa Coptic woman مُزَنَّرَةٍwearing a girdle
نَجعَلُهاwe make her لِلصَبوحِfor morning drinking مِفتاحاa key
from the hand of a girdled Coptic woman.
from the palm of a girdled Coptic woman,
We make it the key to the morning draught.
whom we make the key to our morning drinking.
تَقولُshe says لِلقَومِto the company مِنout of مَجانَتِهاher sauciness
بِاللَهِby God لاdo not تَحبِسَنَّever hold back الأَقداحاthe cups
Out of her sauciness, she says to the company:
She says to the company, in her sauciness:
“By God, do not hold back the goblets!”
"By God, never hold back the cups!"
