And a wine, pure as freshly gathered roses—
And a pure wine, like freshly plucked roses,
age has driven from it every taint and trace of cloudiness.
Aging has stripped it of blemish and cloudiness.

Our ewer is like a gazelle poised upon a height,
Our ewer is like a gazelle upon a height,
stretching out its neck in fear of the hunter.
That has stretched out its neck for fear of the hunter.

It is served to you by one dark and wide of eye, slender in build,
A dark-eyed cupbearer with clefts [unclear wording] pours it for you,
his sleeves hitched up, skilled in blending the wine.
Ready for work, he has mastered the mixing of wine.
ماnot البَدرُthe full moon أَحسَنُmore beautiful مِنهُthan him حينَwhen تَنظُرُهُyou look at him

The full moon is no lovelier than he when you behold him.
The full moon is no fairer than he when you look at him.
Glory be to my Lord—how perfectly He formed him when He created!
Glory to my Lord! He surely shaped him perfectly when He created him.
لاno شَيءَthing أَحسَنُmore beautiful مِنهُthan him حينَwhen تُبصِرُهُyou behold him

Nothing is lovelier than he when you look upon him,
Nothing is lovelier than he when you behold him.
as though he had been stolen from the gardens of everlasting Paradise.
As though he had been stolen from the gardens of eternity.
ماnot زالَceased يَمزُجُهاhe mixes it طَوراًat one time وَيَشرَبُهاand drinks it

He kept on mixing it at one moment, and drinking it
He kept mixing it at one time and drinking it
at another, until I saw intoxication overtake him.
At another, until I saw drunkenness take the lead.
ثُمَّthen تَغَنّىhe sang وَقَدand already دارَتit swirled بِهامَتِهِin his head

Then he began to sing, his head already spinning,
Then he sang, the wine already whirling in his head,
and when he spoke, he could scarcely make the words distinct:
So he could scarcely make his words clear when he spoke:
إِنَّindeed الخَليطَthe companions أَجَدَّbecame intent on البَينَparting فَاِفتَرَقاso they parted

“The companions have resolved in earnest on departure and parted,
Indeed, the companions were intent on parting, and parted,
and the heart has grown as attached to Asmāʾ as a heart can be.”
And the heart was caught by Asma—how it clung to her!
