And a tract of land, crooked within,

A sloping waste, crossed on a slant,

    Barren: when the wolf followed

    The people's trail across it,

His share of the slaughtered beasts was

Every fetus not yet filled out,

    Nor yet overgrown with hair,

Its thigh-sinew lifeless, its eyelids alive.

I crossed it tracklessly, amid peril,

    And a hazard among hazards,

On a mature camel whose tusk had just emerged,

Stirred by the jinn of exuberance,

    Not complaining of dizziness,

    Nor anywhere near weakness.

    As though, after growing lean,

And after the braided girths had slipped,

And the shade moved, then receded,

He were a stocky ass with newly grown second incisors,

Driving white-bellied she-asses, round as balls,

You see them on the broad backs of the dunes,

For the two months of Rabiʿ and Safar.

Until, when the stallion ceased to mate,

    And the awns resembled needles,

And the sweet grass in the hollows withered,

They said to him, 'What do you intend?'

    Exuberant as they spoke,

    Not disobeying what he commanded.

As though, to anyone who watched,

They were riders looking out for rain.

    Until, when the shadow shortened,

They headed from either side of Hajar

Toward a green pool, brimming with turbid water.

    And the hunting-blinds' deceptive emptiness:

A night-roamer, not out for evening talk,

    Nor for reciting the surahs,

Stroking a resonant bow of yusr wood,

    Strung with reverse-twisted strands,

Closely fitted, like a finch's throat.

Until, when the line stood arrayed,

He sent her, if his aim did not stray,

A dire calamity, driven on by fate.

That is my prized mount; she left no

    Equal when the mirage raced.

To reach you, we imposed the journey

    On sunken-eyed she-camels, exchanging snorts,

    Their navels drawn inward,

As a townsman folds striped robes.

    No bird-omens held them back,

Nor rightward-crossing game taken as an omen.

O Fadl, help the bewildered folk,

When among men there is no refuge,

    Nor shelter from fear,

And one of the great calamities descends,

And they say, 'An implacable stroke of fortune!'

Then people are children of caution.

    You dispelled those engulfing troubles

From us, though they had descended with bitter cold.

Like the sun before a staring eye,

    Your loftiest course is distinction.

Your father cleared the trouble from Mudar

On the day of the thronged pavilion,

While fear gathered some and left others.

When he saw the crisis turn grim,

    He rose nobly and prevailed,

Like the stroke of a keen, stout blade:

Whatever it touched, it hewed apart.

    And you follow the trail

Of one with white leg-markings and forehead blazes,

    وَإِن عَلا الأَمرُ اِقتَدَر

    Ever repeating the approach to water and the return;

And when the crisis mounted, he mastered it.

Where, then, are the men of the fray,

When they drank the cup of bitter sap?

You took the open ground when they crept into cover.

Thanks, and the choicest of thanks!

So may God grant you bounty,

    And victory over your foes.

And God grants victory to whomever He wills.

And you, if we fear confinement,

    And Time snarls and bares

    Its two molars, and scowls,

Give abundance as the rain gives.

And yours are a generous gamester's ways,

    Until you see those bands

    Toppling mouth and chin first,

At the pull of an unyielding man: if he tugged

A mountain toward himself, it would bend.

    وَإِن هَفا القَومُ وَقَر

    Fierce: when he meets a foe, he prevails;

    When others waver, he stands firm;

Or fear the task, he dares it.

Then he rears up and opens his mouth,

    Exposing his throat-sac, then bellows.

Then he lifts his flanks and swishes

    His long-haired, tufted tail,

    Lashing at needle-points.

Would you care—and the question offers a choice—

For one who is present when you are absent,

Or, if people assail you, recounts your deeds,

And when he sees goodness, spreads it,

Or, if there is a failing, excuses it?

Or, if there is a failing, excuses it?
