In love I stood upon a mountain's heights,

roaming its haunts as one beloved roams.

My eye ranged through the lush, flowering

garden, and my drink was unclouded,

until a slanderer's fabrication drove me away from him—

a lie he had wrapped in embellishment.

    قَد فَتَّرَت مِنهُ بَعدَ تَخريقِ

    I came after what I had divulged [reading uncertain], apologizing;

it had softened him after harshness.

O you who dismiss my excuse,

may God show you grounds for believing it.

What I would not divulge was betrayed

on a tongue eloquent with tears,

in longing for a lovely form that had won

    its saliva from Paradise's Salsabil.

A young cupbearer, a conversationalist, endowed with

    a singer's conceit and a heretic's wit.

She mingles humility with pride, and has

    a lover's humility and a beloved's pride.

And her rump, like a sand dune, is joined to

a delicately skinned, gracefully slender waist.

I walk beside her, pressing against her

deliberately, though the road is not narrow.

As Kisra said in a proverb he quoted:

'The market's uproar is an opportunity for a thief.'

So praise be to God, O companions: not

    every lover is likewise blessed.

And many a broad waste—I crossed its trackless reaches

on a she-camel superior to other camels.

As though her hind leg, following her foreleg,

were the leg of a boy playing with a ball.

As though her legs were launched,

when she urged them on, from catapults,

toward a man whose wealth's mother is forever

hastening among the people with her collar torn.

His hands are like earth and sky, and no

creature's hand can diminish his two expanses.

If anyone else has anything, it comes from

him, and in that he has never been outstripped.

How many men of excellence you see unmasked by

al-Abbas as counterfeit coin at heart!

And you—when fate had no pebbles

    but warriors' palms and shins,

and their blows with keen-edged swords were

like the tribe's boys striking with twisted rags—

were a thick-necked lion poised upon his claws,

baring long fangs with grim, exposed points.

It was as though his eye, when it blazed,

bulging at the lid, were a strangled man's eye.

When they saw you, their spokesman said:

'The captor of the patricians has come to you!'

So they scattered away, as though they were

    evildoers banished by the trumpet,

when at Mecca the man rallied, feeble in

judgment, intent on error and division.

An inborn quality of yours, inherited from Abu al-

Fadl, which you never sullied with cloudiness.

And al-Rabi's sword would invite to its feast the man

of folly there, and the rider of stupidity.

Ah, what lordship was reserved for Abu al-

Fadl, that patrician of the ample sword-belt!

He who gladdened the Prophet's family in ranks

to which God said, 'Through piety, rise above!'

Then al-Fadl raced and sped straight ahead,

short of his reach, without being overstrained.

So it was said: 'They both feathered an arrow intended for the

goal, its point preceding its nock.'

And indeed Abbas, like his father,

is never outstripped in pursuit of a goal.

God took exquisite care when He fashioned you both,

so you surpassed mankind—what exquisite artistry!

He shaped al-Fadl from generosity and intellect,

and you from wisdom and success.
