وَقَهوَةٍand a wine كَالعَقيقِlike carnelian صافِيَةٍclear
يَطيرُflies مِنfrom كَأسِهاher cup لَهاbelonging to her شَرَرُsparks
And a wine, clear as carnelian,
And wine, pure and clear as agate,
Her sparks fly from her cup.
From whose cup sparks seem to fly,
زَوَّجتُهاI wed her الماءَthe water كَيso that تَذِلَّshe might submit لَهُto him
فَاِمتَعَضَتthen she took offense حينَwhen مَسَّهاtouched her الذَكَرُthe male
I wed her to water so that she might submit to him;
I wed her to water so she might submit to him,
Then she took offense when the male touched her.
But she recoiled in anger when the male touched her,
كَذَلِكَlikewise البِكرُthe virgin عِندَduring خَلوَتِهاher seclusion
يَظهَرُappears مِنهاfrom her الحَياءُmodesty وَالخَفَرُand bashfulness
Likewise, when a virgin is in seclusion,
Just like the virgin in her seclusion,
Her modesty and bashfulness appear.
From whom shyness and bashfulness appear.
