لَمnot أَزَلI cease أَخلَعُI cast off فيin الحُبِّlove الرَسَنthe halter
وَفُؤاديand my heart عِندَwith ظَبيٍa gazelle مُرتَهِنheld in pledge
I have never ceased to cast off the halter in love.
I have not stopped falling in love,
In love, I continue to cast aside the reins,
And my heart is held captive by a gazelle.
And my heart is held captive by a gazelle.
And my heart remains a hostage to a gazelle,
وَجُفونيand my eyelids ساكِباتٌpouring forth دَمعَهاtheir tears
وَالحَشاand the breast فيin حَشوِهِits interior مِنّيof me الحَزَنsorrow
And my eyelids pour forth their tears.
My eyelids pouring out their tears,
While my eyelids pour forth their streaming tears,
And sorrow lies in the depths of my breast.
And my bosom is filled with sorrow for me.
And grief fills the very depths of my being,
مُنذُsince أَبصَرتُI beheld هِلالاًa crescent moon طالِعاًrising
يَتَثَنّىhe sways بِقَوامٍwith a figure كَالغُصُنlike a bough
Since I beheld a rising crescent moon,
Since I saw the crescent rising,
Since the moment I beheld a rising crescent moon,
Swaying with a figure like a bough.
Bending with a figure like a branch.
Swaying with a stature like a slender bough.

وَبِحاءٍand by a ḥāʾ (letter ḥ) فيهِin him قَلبيmy heart قَدindeed فُتِنwas bewitched
His mīm has worn my heart thin with passion.
Its "meem" has healed my heart in passion,
His 'M' has worn my heart thin in passion,
And by a ḥāʾ in him my heart has been bewitched.
And with the "baa" in it my heart is infatuated.
And by the 'H' within it, my heart is captivated,
وَبِميمٍand with a mīm (letter m) بَعدُهُafter it أَقلَقَنيhe made me restless
وَبِدالٍand with a dāl (letter d) سَلَّhe drew out روحيmy soul مِنfrom بَدَنa body
And with a mīm after it, he has made me restless.
With the "meem" after it has disturbed me,
And by the 'M' that follows, he has troubled my peace,
And with a dāl he has drawn my soul from my body.
And with the "daal" has drawn out my soul from my body.
And with a 'D', he drew my soul from my body.
