أَيُّهاO الناسُpeople اِرحَمونيhave mercy on me
وَتَمَشّواand walk بيwith me إِلَيهِto him
O people, have mercy on me,
O people, have mercy on me
O people, have mercy upon me,
And walk with me to him.
And walk with me to Him
And guide my steps slowly toward him.
كَلِّموهُspeak to him فيin سُكونٍcalm
لاdo not تَشُقُّنَّbe hard عَلَيهِon him
Speak to him calmly;
Speak to Him calmly
Speak to him with gentle calm,
Do not be hard on him.
Do not make it difficult for Him
And do not press him too hard.
كَلِّموهُspeak to him اليَومَtoday يَرضىhe may be pleased
عَنwith أَسيرٍa captive فيin يَدَيهِhis two hands
Speak to him today, that he may be pleased
Speak to Him today, He will be pleased
Speak to him today, that he may be pleased
With a captive in his hands.
With a prisoner in His hands
With a captive held fast in his hands.
لَوif رَأَيتُمyou saw حينَwhen يَمشيhe walks
كاسِراًlowering مِنof حاجِبَيهِhis two eyebrows
If you saw him as he walks,
If you saw Him walking
If only you saw him when he walks,
With his brows drawn down,
With eyes cast down
With the languid arch of his brow,
فيin إِزارٍa waist-wrap قَدalready لَواهُhe wound it
ثُمَّthen دَلّىhe let hang down طَرَفَيهِits two ends
In a waist-wrap he has wound around himself,
In a wrap He wore
In a garment he has artfully wound,
Then let its two ends hang down,
Then lowered His gaze
Letting its two ends trail down,
قُلتُمُyou would say ذاthis الفَتكُthe slaying حَقّاًtruly
لَيسَis not ماwhat نَحنُwe عَلَيهِengaged in it
You would say, ‘This is truly slaying,
You would say this grace, truly
You would say: "This is true destruction,"
Not what we are about.’
Is not what we are upon
"Not the life that we knew before."
