لَقَدindeed أَلبَسَhas clothed اللَهُGod السَلامَةَsafety أُمَّةًa community
لَقَد أَلبَسَ اللَهُ السَلامَةَ أُمَّةً
يَكونُis أَميرُcommander المُؤمِنينَthe faithful أَمينَهاits trusted guardian
يَكونُ أَميرُ المُؤمِنينَ أَمينَها
Indeed, God has clothed a community in safety,
God has clothed this nation in peace
God has clothed the nation in a raiment of safety,
whose trusted guardian is the Commander of the Faithful.
With the commander of the faithful as its trustee
With the Commander of the Faithful as its trustee.
حَمَيتَyou defended رَحاهاits millstone (figuratively, its center) بِالقَنابِلِwith squadrons وَالقَناand lances
حَمَيتَ رَحاها بِالقَنابِلِ وَالقَنا
وَأَبقَيتَand you preserved دُنياهاits worldly life عَلَيهاfor it وَدينَهاand its faith
وَأَبقَيتَ دُنياها عَلَيها وَدينَها
You defended its millstone with squadrons and lances,
You have protected its sanctuaries with missiles and artillery
You protected its axis with legions and lances,
and preserved for it its worldly life and its faith.
And preserved its worldly affairs and religion
And preserved for it both its world and its faith.
يَراكَsees you بَنوthe sons of المَنصورِal-Mansur أَولاهُمُthe most entitled among them بِهاto it
يَراكَ بَنو المَنصورِ أَولاهُمُ بِها
وَماand not أَضمَرواthey harbored inwardly غَيرَother than الَّتيthat which يُظهِرونَهاthey reveal it
وَما أَضمَروا غَيرَ الَّتي يُظهِرونَها
The sons of al-Mansur deem you the most entitled among them to it,
The Abbasids see you as their foremost defender
The Sons of Al-Mansur deem you the worthiest heir,
and they have harbored nothing other than what they openly reveal.
Though their intentions differ from what they profess
And conceal in their hearts only what they declare.
