Do not weep for Layla, nor yearn for Hind.

And drink amid roses some wine as red as roses—

A cup that, when it flows down its drinker’s throat,

Lends its redness to his eye and cheek.

For the wine is a ruby, and the cup a pearl,

From the palm of a tall, slender serving girl.

She serves you wine from her eye, and from her hand

Wine—so you have no escape from two intoxications.

I have two raptures, and my drinking companions one—

Something granted to me alone among them.
