أَياah رُبَّmany a وَجهٍface فيin التُرابِthe dust عَتيقِnoble
وَياand ah رُبَّmany a حُسنٍbeauty فيin التُرابِthe dust رَقيقِdelicate
Ah, many a noble face lies in the dust!
O Lord of a face in ancient dust interred,
Oh, how many a noble face lies within the dust,
And ah, how much delicate beauty lies in the dust!
And O Lord of beauty in dust thin and slight,
And how much delicate beauty lies within the dust,
وَياand ah رُبَّmany a حَزمٍresolve فيin التُرابِthe dust وَنَجدَةٍand courage
وَياand ah رُبَّmany a رَأيٍjudgment فيin التُرابِthe dust وَثيقِsound
And ah, how much resolve and courage lie in the dust!
O Lord of wisdom in dust buried deep,
And how much resolve and valor lie within the dust,
And ah, many a sound judgment lies in the dust!
And O Lord of reason in dust firmly bound tight,
And how much steadfast judgment lies within the dust.
أَرىI see كُلَّevery حَيٍّliving being هالِكاًdoomed to die وَابنَand the son of هالِكٍone doomed to die
وَذاand possessing نَسَبٍa lineage فيamong الهالِكينَthe dead عَريقِdeeply rooted
I see every living being doomed to die, and the son of one doomed to die,
I see each living soul doomed to decay,
I see every living soul perishing, the son of one who perished,
And possessed of a lineage deeply rooted among the dead.
Though of glorious ancestry and lineage bright,
Possessing a lineage deep-rooted among the dead.
فَقُلso tell لِقَريبِto one near الدارِthe home إِنَّكَindeed you ظاعِنٌdeparting
إِلىto مَنزِلٍan abode نائيdistant المَحَلِّthe location سَحيقِfar-off
So tell the one whose home is near: you are indeed departing
Say to the neighbour in his house drawing near:
So say to the one dwelling near: you are but a traveler,
To an abode in a distant, far-off place.
"You journey to a dwelling far remote from sight."
Bound for a distant abode, a place far-flung and deep.
إِذاwhen امتَحَنَput to the test الدُنياthe world لَبيبٌa discerning man تَكَشَّفَتit revealed itself
لَهُto him عَنas عَدوٍّan enemy فيin ثِيابِthe clothing of صَديقِa friend
When a discerning man puts the world to the test, it reveals itself
When life was tried, the wise man it revealed
When a man of wisdom tests the world, it unmasks itself,
To him as an enemy in a friend's clothing.
A foe in the garb of a friend, shining bright.
Revealing a foe to him, clad in the robes of a friend.
