Find solace, Abu al-Abbas, for the loss of the best of the departed,
You scorned Abul Abbas for a perished good man,
Take solace, O Abu al-Abbas, for the best of those who perished,
in the noblest living man who ever was or is.
Though the living be nobler, or yet to be born.
By the noblest of the living who has been or is to be.

لَهُنَّ مَساوٍ مَرَّةً وَمَحاسِنُ
The events of days—their fortunes turn;
The days and their changes but turn in a round,
The accidents of days, whose shifting fortunes cycle round,
they bring misfortunes at one turn, and blessings at another.
To their Maker returning for weal or for scorn.
Bring forth at times a bitterness, and at times a grace.
وَفيmatched in worth الحَيُّthe living man بِالمَيتِthe dead man الَّذيwhom غَيَّبَconcealed الثَرىthe earth
وَفي الحَيُّ بِالمَيتِ الَّذي غَيَّبَ الثَرى
فَلاso not أَنتَyou مَغبونٌcheated وَلاand not المَوتُdeath غابِنُone who cheats
فَلا أَنتَ مَغبونٌ وَلا المَوتُ غابِنُ
The living man matches the worth of the dead whom the earth has hidden;
And life cannot lose the dead man whom earth
In the living lies a ransom for the dead whom dust has veiled,
so you are not cheated, nor is death a cheat.
Has hidden; nor death be deluded of her command.
So neither are you cheated, nor is Death the one who cheats.
