    Yazid, what has befallen you?

Have you gone mad, or what has come over you?

Has power made you proud in my absence,

or has a companion led you astray?

    Or has heedlessness arisen in

you, or has passion worn you down?

Or has a fit of madness met its

time, so this is due to that?

If He has afflicted you, indeed

God has made your affliction grievous.

Come to me and tell me—

may your two eyes never see!

Do you consent to cutting off

everyone who has been true to you?

Rather, I think the tormented one

is none but a man who made you his brother.

And if the God of the

servants decrees that I shall not see you—

and by the bounty of a Lord who, in forsaking

    and harshness, has strengthened you:

were the two hands of Inan,

in softness, your own two hands,

and the two cheeks of Tamtam

    mirrored by your two cheeks,

and the two eyes of Rahma, in

their measure, your own two eyes,

and were you peerless in beauty,

I would not endure your harshness.

    Never love Yazid

after what he has shown you.

And I had forbidden my heart,

in solitude, and it feigned tears.

So I said: May I not be beguiled by

    your weeping, O my heart.

    So cut him off utterly,

    and abandon him utterly.

    And if you seek anything

of his affection and he turns you away,

then the whip—as long as it is held

    fast by your right hand!

By God, by God, my Lord—

I say these oaths one after another—

I shall surely truss you in a

binding, with the spare length of your cloak.

    Until, once we have thrown

you aside, we come at you:

one taking a sandal to you,

    and another taking a tooth-stick,

and this one a bridle, and this one

a whip, and that one a pestle.

    Until, when we have flayed

your nape as a wild ass is flayed,

    and others have come afterward,

    cutting the nets apart,

until you say, in protest at

    what I overwhelm you with:

O most merciful of people to me

    once—what has befallen you?

And you have commanded, from among the jinn,

    Hawqal and Dinak,

    to make you stand on

all fours, and make you kneel,

until, when you can no longer

stir beneath the impact of the whistling,

they both ask you to make amends; and if you return

to it afterward, they both will crucify you.
