O monastery of Ḥanna, in Dhāt al-Ukayrāḥ,

Whoever sobers up from you, I am not sober.

I saw in you gazelles that have no horns,

Playing with our minds and souls.

Every man whose hair-partings are dry frequents it,

For lack of oil, wearing tattered haircloth,

Among a band reduced by their dread

Of what they were warned would befall them to mere shadows.

They do not approach water carrying vessels,

But scoop it from the pools with their palms.
