ياO قَلبُheart ياO خائِنَbetrayer الحَبيبِthe beloved
ماnot أَنتَyou إِلّاexcept مِنَamong القُلوبِthe hearts
O heart, O betrayer of the beloved!
O heart, O betrayer of the beloved
O heart, O betrayer of the beloved,
You are nothing but one heart among others.
You are nothing but one of the hearts
You are nothing but an ordinary heart.
قُرَّةُdelight عَينيmy eye وَبَردُand coolness عَيشيmy life
بانَhas departed وَرَيحانَتيand my sweet basil وَطيبيand my fragrance
The delight of my eye and the coolness of my life
The delight of my eye and the joy of my life
The delight of my eye and the coolness of my life
has departed—my sweet basil and my fragrance.
My radiance, my basil, and my scent
Has departed, along with my sweet basil and my fragrance.
وَلَمand did not تُقَطِّعtear apart وَلَمand did not تُضَمِّنtuck in
أَثوابَكَyour garments البيضَthe white ones فيat الجَنوبِthe flanks
And you neither tore nor tucked in
You did not rend your white robes
Yet you did not shred, nor did you tear apart
your white garments at the flanks.
In the south wind
Your white robes down their sides,
غَدَرتَyou betrayed لاno شَكُّdoubt بِالحَبيبِagainst the beloved
أَحلِفُI swear بِالسامِعِby the Hearer المُجيبِthe Answerer
You have betrayed the beloved, without a doubt;
You betrayed, no doubt, the beloved
You have surely betrayed the beloved;
I swear by the Hearer, the Answerer.
I swear by the All-Hearing, the Responder
I swear by the All-Hearing, the Responder.
فَقالَthen it said ذَنبٌa sin عَزايَmy consolation عَنهُwithout him
فَقُلتُso I said مِنamong أَعظَمِthe greatest الذُنوبِthe sins
Then it said, "Is finding solace without him a sin?"
It said it was a sin beyond it
It said: "My finding solace for him is a sin,"
I said, "One of the greatest sins."
I said it was among the greatest sins
And I replied: "Indeed, one of the greatest sins,"
أَوor يُقرَنُis yoked القَلبُthe heart بِالوَجيبِto throbbing
وَتُغمَرَand is flooded الأُذنُthe ear بِالنَحيبِwith wailing
Or let the heart be yoked to throbbing,
Or that the heart be chained to grief
Unless the heart is yoked to trembling palpitations,
and the ear be flooded with wailing,
And the ear immersed in weeping
And the ear is drowned in the sound of wailing,
وَتُرسِلُand lets loose العَينُthe eye ماقِيَيهاits two inner corners
بِالفَيضِwith a flood مِنfrom مائِهاits water السَكوبِstreaming
and the eye set both its inner corners flowing
And the eye sends forth its waters
And the eye unleashes its tear-ducts
with a flood of its streaming water.
In a torrent from its springs
With an overflowing flood of pouring water.
فَثَمَّso then أَدريI know أَشَرَّworst قَلبٍheart
أَنَّكَthat you تَأسىgrieve عَلىfor الحَبيبِthe beloved
Then I shall know, O worst of hearts,
Then I knew no viler heart
Only then will I know, O most wicked of hearts,
that you grieve for the beloved.
Than yours, grieving for the beloved
That you truly mourn for the beloved.
