وَأَخوَسَand a sunken-eyed man دِلّاجٍa frequent night visitor عَلَيَّto me وَرائِحٍand an evening visitor
رَجاءَin hope of نَوالٍa gift لَوif only يُعانُhe is helped بِجودِby generosity
And a sunken-eyed man, visiting me by night and at evening,
A silent lover with sighs for me,
And a squint-eyed intruder, pacing to and fro, night and day,
Hoping for a gift—if only generosity would come to his aid.
Hoping for union though far from generosity.
Hoping for a gift—if only his hope were met with bounty.
وَإِنّيand indeed I وَإِيّاهُand he لِقَرنانِsurely two rivals نَصطَليwe suffer the heat
مِنَfrom المَطلِstalling ناراًa fire غَيرَnot ذاتِhaving خُمودِdying out
And he and I are indeed two rivals, scorched
Yet he and I are paired fire-sticks,
Truly, he and I are matched adversaries, burning together
By a fire of stalling that never goes out.
Kindling flames that never fade.
In the fire of stalling, a flame that never dies down.
قَطَبتُI frowned لَهُat him وَجهاًa face قَطوباًdeeply scowling عَنِaway from النَدىgenerosity
وَأَيأَستُهُand I made him despair مِنof نائِلٍa gift بِوَعيدِwith a threat
I showed him a scowling face, sternly withholding generosity,
I turned my face from him, aloof,
I knit my brows at him, a face scowling against generosity,
And with a threat I made him despair of any gift.
And dashed his hopes with threats.
And cut off his hope of any gain with a stern warning:
فَإِنso if كُنتَyou are لاnot عَنfrom سوءِbadness فِعلِكَof your conduct مُقلِعاًdesisting
فَدونَكَthen go ahead فَاستَظهِرthen fortify yourself بِنَعلِwith a sandal حَديدِof iron
So if you will not desist from your ill conduct,
If you won't stop your misdeeds,
"If you will not desist from your foul behavior,
Then go ahead—fortify yourself with an iron sandal.
Then walk away in iron-shod feet.
Then go ahead—fortify yourself with sandals of iron,
فَعِندِيَfor I have مَطلٌa delay لاnot يُطيرُputs to flight غُرابَهُits crow
مُطيرٌone who puts to flight وَلاnor يُدعىis summoned لَهُfor it بِوَليدِfor a boy
For I have a delay whose crow cannot be put to flight
I have a glance that no crow can scare off,
For I possess a delay whose ominous raven never takes flight;
By any bird-scarer; nor is a boy summoned for it.
A downpour that needs no clouds.
No one can startle it away, nor is an offspring ever born of it."
