مَنwhoever سَبَّنيinsults me مِنfrom ثَقيفٍThaqif
فَإِنَّنيthen indeed I لَنwill not أَسُبَّهinsult him
Whoever of Thaqif insults me,
Whoever insults me from Thaqif
Whoever among Thaqif reviles me,
I shall not insult him.
I will not insult him
I shall certainly not revile him in return.
أَبَحتُI made freely available عِرضيmy honor ثَقيفاًThaqif
وَلَطمَand slapping خَدّيmy cheek وَضَربَهand striking it
I have made my honor fair game for Thaqif,
I offered my honor to Thaqif
I have made my honor permissible for Thaqif,
And let them slap my cheek and strike it.
And he slapped my cheek and hit it
And yielded my cheek to their slapping and blows.
وَكَيفَand how يُنكَرُis deemed strange هَذاthis
وَفيهُمُand among them ليfor me أَحِبَّهloved ones
And how could this be thought strange,
And how can this be denied
And how could this be denied,
When I have loved ones among them?
When among them I have those I love
When among them are those I hold dear?
I shall surely be generous بِحِلميwith my forbearance
عَبدَslave of الحَبيبِthe beloved وَكَلبَهand his dog
I shall surely extend my forbearance
I will be generous with my patience
My forbearance shall surely embrace
To the beloved’s slave and his dog.
To the servant of the Beloved and his dog
The slave of the beloved, and even his dog.
وَلاand not أَكونُI shall be كَمَنlike one who لَمdid not
يوسِعmake spacious لِمَولاهُfor his master قَلبَهhis heart
And I shall not be like one who did not
And I will not be like one who did not
And I will not be like one who did not
Make room in his heart for his master,
Expand his heart for his Master
Make room in his heart for his friend,
فَقامَthen he rose يَدعوhe prays عَلَيهِagainst him
وَيَجعَلُand deems اللَهَGod حَسبَهsufficient for him
Then rose to pray against him,
So he stood cursing him
But rose instead to invoke curses upon him,
And deemed God sufficient for himself.
And made Allah suffice for him
And called upon God to be his reckoner.
