دُموعيmy tears مَزَجَتmingled كاسيmy cup
وَماand not أَظهَرتُI revealed وَسواسيmy troubled thoughts
My tears mingled in my cup,
My tears mixed in my cup
My tears have mingled with my cup,
And I did not reveal my troubled thoughts.
And I did not reveal my obsession
Though I revealed not my inner torment,
وَلَكِنbut نَطَقَتspoke عَينيmy eye
فَنَمَّتso it betrayed عَنabout هَوىlove القاسيthe cruel one
But my eye spoke,
But my eyes spoke
But my eyes spoke out the truth,
So it betrayed my love for the cruel one.
And uncovered my cruel love
Betraying my passion for the cruel one.
وَقالواand they spoke فِيَّabout me بِالظَنِّon suspicion
فَنَكَّستُso I lowered لَهُمbefore them راسيmy head
And they spoke of me on suspicion,
And they talked about me with suspicion
They spoke of me based on mere suspicion,
So I bowed my head before them.
So I bowed my head to them
So I lowered my head before their gaze.
وَمَنand who يَسلَمُis safe ياO حِبِّbeloved
يَmy (possessive ending) مِنfrom أَلسِنَةِtongues of الناسِthe people
And who is safe, O beloved
And who is safe, oh love
And who is ever safe, O my beloved,
Of mine, from people's tongues?
From people's tongues
From the sharp tongues of the people?
وَهَبنيand suppose that I بُحتُI spoke openly بِالحُبِّof love
فَهَلthen is there فيin الحُبِّlove مِنany باسِharm
And suppose I spoke openly of love—
Passion has possessed me
Suppose I did confess this love,
Is there, then, any harm in love?
Is there any harm in love?
Is there, in love, any cause for shame?
