أَصبَحتُI have become غَيرَnot مُدافَعٍcontested مَولاكاyour client
وَالحَظُّand the good fortune ليis mine فيin أَنthat أَكونَI should be كَذاكاso
I have become, beyond dispute, your client,
I have become unconcerned, no longer defending you, my beloved
I have become your bondman, undisputed,
And mine is the good fortune of being so.
And fortunate am I to be this way
And high is my fortune to be exactly so.
لِلَّهِto God دَرّيmy excellence (literally, my milk) أَيُّwhat a رَهنِhostage to مَنِيَّةٍdeath
بِالأَمسِyesterday كُنتُI was وَهالِكٍand one doomed to perish لَولاكاbut for you
God bless me! What a hostage to death
Praise be to God! Which pledge of death was I under yesterday?
God marvel at my state! What a hostage of death
I was yesterday—and would have perished but for you!
I would have been doomed were it not for you
I was yesterday, and perished, were it not for you.
أَصبَحتَyou have become مُعتَدّاًclaiming credit عَلَيَّover me بِنِعمَةٍfor a favor
ماnot كانَwould have يُنعِمُهاbestowed it عَلَيَّupon me سِواكاanyone other than you
You now hold me indebted for a favor
You have become ungrateful, bestowing on me a favor
You have placed me under a debt of grace,
That no one but you would have bestowed upon me.
That no one but you used to bestow upon me
That none but you could ever have conferred.
