لناwe have أنفسsouls لكنهاbut they اليومَtoday ظلمةdarkness
لنا أنفس لكنها اليومَ ظلمة
وناشئةand a rising generation لكنهاbut it بعدُstill فيin المهدِthe cradle
وناشئة لكنها بعدُ في المهدِ
We have souls, but today they are shrouded in darkness;
We have souls, yet today they are darkness.
and a rising generation, yet it is still in the cradle.
And a rising generation, yet it is still in the cradle.
إذاwhen نحنwe طالعناwe surveyed عهودthe ages of فخارناour glory
إذا نحن طالعنا عهود فخارنا
رايناwe saw عظاماًbones لاnot تُعيدrestore ولاand not تبديbring forth
راينا عظاماً لا تُعيد ولا تبدي
Whenever we survey the ages of our pride,
When we survey the ages of our glory,
we see bones that bring nothing back and bring nothing forth.
We see bones that can neither restore nor bring forth anything.
وإنand if نحنwe لاحظناwe examined قضاياmatters concerning انحطاطناour decline
وإن نحن لاحظنا قضايا انحطاطنا
حكمناwe concluded بأنthat الجهلignorance آفتُناour blight المرديdeadly
حكمنا بأن الجهل آفتُنا المردي
And if we examine the causes of our decline,
And if we examine the circumstances of our decline,
we conclude that deadly ignorance is our scourge.
We conclude that ignorance is our deadly blight.
تصدرtook the foremost seat أقوامpeoples علىupon عرشthe throne of مجدناour glory
تصدر أقوام على عرش مجدنا
وماand not ذاكthat إلاexcept للقعودbecause of holding back عنfrom الجِدِّearnest effort
وما ذاك إلا للقعود عن الجِدِّ
Other nations have assumed pride of place upon the throne of our glory,
Peoples have seated themselves upon the throne of our glory,
only because we have held back from earnest striving.
And that is only because we hold back from earnest effort.
وكناand we were سراجthe lamp of المجدglory قبلbefore خمودناour dying out
وكنا سراج المجد قبل خمودنا
فلاso may it not كانbe منof أمجادناour glories آخِرَthe last العهدacquaintance
فلا كان من أمجادنا آخِرَ العهد
We were the lamp of glory before our flame died down;
And we were glory's lamp before our light died out;
may that not be the last we know of our glories.
So may this not be the last we see of our glories.
أقيمواset straight بنيsons of أميmy mother صدورthe breasts of مطيكمyour mounts
أقيموا بني أمي صدور مطيكم
فلسناfor we are not إلىtoward غورlowland نسيرwe journey ولاnor نجدِhighland
فلسنا إلى غور نسير ولا نجدِ
O sons of my mother, set your mounts upon a straight course,
Set straight your mounts' breasts, sons of my mother,
for we journey toward neither lowland nor upland.
For we journey neither to the lowlands nor to the uplands.
نضحيwe sacrifice بروحwith the spirit of المجدglory فيin سُبلthe paths of عارناour disgrace
نضحي بروح المجد في سُبل عارنا
نكستُI lowered لهاbecause of them رأسيmy head حياءًout of shame منbefore المجدِglory
نكستُ لها رأسي حياءً من المجدِ
We sacrifice the spirit of glory on the paths of our shame;
We sacrifice the spirit of glory along the paths of our disgrace;
at that, ashamed before glory, I bowed my head.
Because of them I lowered my head, ashamed before glory.
