تقارنهaccompanies him فيin كلevery أمرmatter فضيلةvirtue
تقارنه في كل أمر فضيلة
ويلبسand he wears فيin أطوارهhis states ماwhat يلائمis fitting
ويلبس في أطواره ما يلائم
Virtue accompanies him in every matter.
And in each of his states, he wears what is fitting.
تمرpass القضاياaffairs طيباتpleasantly بحمدهthrough his praise
تمر القضايا طيبات بحمده
فكلso every مقامstation أوor سلوكcourse of conduct مكارمnoble qualities
فكل مقام أو سلوك مكارم
Affairs pass pleasantly, thanks to his praise.
For every station or course of conduct is marked by noble qualities.
كأنas though مياهwaters البدرthe full moon فيin ماءradiance وجههof his face
كأن مياه البدر في ماء وجهه
يرقرقهاhe makes them shimmer منfrom جوهرthe essence البشرcheerfulness ساجمflowing
يرقرقها من جوهر البشر ساجم
It is as though the moon’s waters were in the radiance of his face.
He makes them shimmer, flowing from the essence of cheerfulness.
يحلhe alights وفيwhile in الآفاقthe horizons رحلةthe journey عزمهof his resolve
يحل وفي الآفاق رحلة عزمه
فإنand if سارhe travels فالأفلاكthen the celestial spheres تلكthose العزائمambitions
فإن سار فالأفلاك تلك العزائم
He alights, while the journey of his resolve reaches across the horizons.
And if he travels, the celestial spheres are those ambitions.
لهto him belongs الحكمauthority بعدafter اللهGod فيover أمرthe affairs دهرهof his age
له الحكم بعد الله في أمر دهره
ولكنyet عليهover him مكسبthe earning الحمدof praise حاكمrules
ولكن عليه مكسب الحمد حاكم
After God, he has authority over the affairs of his age.
Yet the duty to earn praise governs him.
وماand do not تكسبearn الأسبابcircumstances محمودthe praiseworthy فعلهof his deeds
وما تكسب الأسباب محمود فعله
ولكنbut لهhe has خلقa character منof الحمدpraise لازمinseparable
ولكن له خلق من الحمد لازم
Circumstances do not earn the credit for his praiseworthy deeds.
Rather, a praiseworthy character is inseparable from him.
