The true natures of the soul's stations are unknown,

And whoever claims to know them is mistaken in his claim.

The eye perceives everything by sight except itself,

And the hand grasps everything except its own wrist.

Flattery distances the soul from understanding itself,

And the soul is beguiled by those who flatter it deceitfully.

Indeed, flattery strikes the minds in the face,

Like a veil over the eyes, it blinds them.

He who offers you your fault as a gift loves sincerely—not

A flattering dissembler who camouflages a blemish.

And the wisest of people is he who shows his humility,

Of his own accord, before a friend's criticism of what lies within him.

And folly lies in shutting the door to criticism through

The soul's vehemence in its claims.

You would see what you do not see in the soul, if it listened

To its backbiter and detested a friend who draws close to it.

And many an enemy's opinion of you is better than

That of a close friend who praises the soul and beguiles it.

So lower your gaze in awe, should there be unveiled

To you the secrets of things you keep concealed.

And you would surely excuse them, insofar as you judge them fairly,

For their opinion of you, given the thoughts you conceal.

And cast off your pride in the soul that has grown conceited

Over nothing, and desist from its excesses.

And the most fortunate of people is he whose virtue

A critic guides toward greater excellence.

And for one who sees himself as he is seen

By another, the soul is at its loftiest [heights].
