The true natures of the soul's stations are unknown.

And whoever claims to make them known is mistaken in his claim.

The eye sees everything except itself,

And the hand grasps everything except its own wrist.

Flattery keeps the soul from understanding itself,

And the soul is deceived by those who feign friendship with it.

    Indeed, flattery strikes minds head-on,

Blinding them like a veil over the eyes.

He who gifts you your fault has shown true love—not

A flattering dissembler who glosses over a flaw.

And the wisest of people is he who shows humility

Of his own accord, when a friend criticizes what lies within him.

And folly lies in shutting the door to criticism on account

Of the soul's overbearing pride in its claims.

You would see in the soul what you do not see, if it listened

To its backbiter and spurned a friend who draws close to it.

And often an enemy's opinion of you is fairer than

That of a friend whose praise of the soul beguiles it.

So lower your gaze in awe, should there be revealed

To you the secrets of things you keep concealed.

And you would surely excuse them, in fairness to them,

For their opinion of you, given the opinions you conceal.

And cast off your delusion about the soul that admires itself

Without cause, and desist from its excesses.

And the most fortunate of people is he whose virtue

Is guided by a critic toward greater excellence.

And whoever sees himself as he is seen

By another—his soul stands at its loftiest station.
