سبق الطليح وكل ظهر القادي

سبق الطليح وكل ظهر القادي

Set forth with your travel-worn mount at the summons; perhaps

Saddle your weary mount for the march; perhaps

the weary mount may race ahead while the hardy mount’s back grows faint.

The weary mount will take the lead, while the swift one's back grows tired.

قد رشحتك لشأنها بشواهد

أبدى كواكبها الجمال البادي

It has chosen you for its cause through signs

It has prepared you for its purpose through signs

whose stars the manifest Beauty has revealed.

أتراه يدعوك الحبيب لقربه

فإذا اقتربت رماك بالابعاد

فإذا اقتربت رماك بالابعاد

Do you suppose the Beloved calls you near to Him,

Do you think the Beloved calls you close to Him,

then, when you draw near, casts you far away?

Then casts you away when you draw near?

لو تهت من نور الجمال بمشهد

لو تهت من نور الجمال بمشهد

لرأيت سر اللطف بالأشهاد

لرأيت سر اللطف بالأشهاد

Had you wandered bewildered by Beauty’s light in some vision,

Were you bewildered by the light of Beauty in a vision,

you would have seen the secret of divine gentleness among the witnesses.

You would see the secret of grace among the witnesses.

نور الجمال على المظاهر لائح

فالحظه مرتسماً على الايجاد

فالحظه مرتسماً على الايجاد

Beauty’s light shines upon all manifestations;

The light of Beauty shines upon the manifestations;

behold it, inscribed upon creation.

So behold it imprinted upon creation.

لولاه لاحترقت بنور جلاله

وجهلت حكمة عالم الأضداد

وجهلت حكمة عالم الأضداد

Without it, the light of His majesty would consume you,

Without it, you would burn in the light of His Majesty,

and you would fail to grasp the wisdom of the realm of opposites.

And not know the wisdom of the world of opposites.

ألقاك في دار الفناء لحكمة

ألقاك في دار الفناء لحكمة

خفيت حقائقها عن الأفراد

خفيت حقائقها عن الأفراد

He cast you into the abode of passingness for a wisdom

He cast you into the abode of transience for a wise purpose

whose realities are hidden from singular souls.

Whose truths are hidden from individuals.

ودعاك أن أقبل إلي ولا تخف

ودعاك أن أقبل إلي ولا تخف

في المدلجين إلي من أجنادي

في المدلجين إلي من أجنادي

And He called you: “Come to Me, and do not fear,

And He called you: “Come to Me, and do not fear,

among those journeying by night toward Me, who are of My hosts.

Among those of My hosts who journey to Me by night.

أنت الأمين على أمانتنا التي

أنت الأمين على أمانتنا التي

ثقلت على الأفلاك والأطواد

ثقلت على الأفلاك والأطواد

You are the trustee of Our Trust, which

أترى تؤديها بغير اعانتي

Do you think you can discharge it without My aid,

I clothed you in the Seven Oft-Repeated as a robe,

within a form belonging to the world of bodies.

In a frame from the world of bodies.

فاخلع كثيفتك التي لا تنبغي

لشهود حضرتنا مع الأشهاد

لشهود حضرتنا مع الأشهاد

So cast off your dense corporeal nature, which is unfit

to witness Our Presence among the witnesses.

واغسل بماء القدس عشر لطائف

هي أنت من دنس الطباع الكادي

And with the water of holiness wash ten subtle faculties

that are your very self, clean of sullied natural disposition.

Which are you—of the obstructive grime of natural dispositions.

You were given five seas to drink, that you might live

in a peerless thirst, foremost among those who come to drink.

Singular thirst, a forerunner among those who come to drink.

I made them gush forth for you from the attributes of the Essence,
