My God, You have shown what is beautiful out of grace,

and concealed, O All-Forgiving, every ugly deed.

My God, nothing is as ugly as the sin with which

a created soul has defied the majesty of divinity.

My God, the servant lives in disobedience as long as he lives,

while You, my God, conceal sin.

He defies his Lord through disobedience, knowing

that You reckon his open deeds and what is hidden.

My God, how wretched is my soul! It drives me

    toward what displeases You, unashamed.

It plunges into the depths of error; there has come between it

and You, of its own making, one flood upon another.

And You nourish it, and You overwhelm it

with well-being in every state, and blessing.

I rushed toward the forbidden until I committed it,

while You see, O Lord, the evil of my step.

My God, I now confess my sin, repenting

to You; so pardon my transgression, O my God.

“And indeed I am All-Forgiving to whoever repents”—bring me back

to You; do not let my repentance end in disappointment.

My God, just as You have spread Your ample veil,

so be generous to me by erasing my grievous sins.
