My God, You gratefully reward an obedient servant's meager deeds

with the finest reward, which no passage of time destroys.

Whatever righteous deeds there are that You gratefully acknowledge,

Your gratitude to me for them is pure grace.

And I have nothing that warrants Your gratitude to me—

not a mote's weight, even if I brought acts of obedience.

    فأين تعالى اللّه فضلي ومنتي

    And gratitude is only a response to a favor;

where, then—exalted be God—are my bounty and my favor?

Even if I lived for ages and brought their like

in good deeds and acts of obedience, as numerous as created beings,

and offered the striving of all beings in worship,

by tearing my limbs apart and consuming my lifeblood,

and those You created fell short of me, along with all whom

You will create, my Lord, in my stations of nearness to You—

I would still not deserve Your gratitude

for a blessing You bestowed upon my feeble strength.

Nor did You confine Yourself to giving without praise.

Praise be Yours for graciously thanking Your creatures.

Praise be Yours; true thanksgiving belongs to the True One alone,

and is not, in truth, within our power.

So grant me perfect gratitude for every blessing,

even though my gratitude cannot repay a single blessing.
