نصبت لهم من نير الذكر معلماً

نصبت لهم من نير الذكر معلماً

وبوأتهم من أنفع الذخر مغنما

I raised for them a landmark from luminous remembrance,

I raised for them a beacon from the radiance of remembrance,

and lodged them in a prize from the most profitable treasure.

And allotted them a bounty from the most beneficial treasure.

وصيرت نفسي خادماً لطريقة

وصيرت نفسي خادماً لطريقة

بها هام أهل اللّه في الأرض والسما

بها هام أهل اللّه في الأرض والسما

I made myself a servant of a path

And made myself a servant of a path

by which the people of God were enraptured on earth and in heaven.

فيا لرجال الحب والكأس مفعم

فيا لرجال الحب والكأس مفعم

هلم اشربوا هذا المغنى ترنما

هلم اشربوا هذا المغنى ترنما

Oh, what men of love, while the cup brims!

So, O men of love—the cup is brimming!

Come, drink; this song has risen melodiously.

Come, drink this song, chanting melodiously.

عصرت لكم من خمرة اللّه صفوها

عصرت لكم من خمرة اللّه صفوها

فموتوا بها سكراً فما السكر مأثما

فموتوا بها سكراً فما السكر مأثما

For you I pressed the pure essence of God’s wine;

I pressed out for you the purest of God's wine;

die drunk upon it—for such drunkenness is no sin.

So die drunk on it, for drunkenness is no sin.

لقد هام أهل الاستقامة قبلنا

لقد هام أهل الاستقامة قبلنا

بها فانتشوا بين الخليقة هيما

بها فانتشوا بين الخليقة هيما

The people of uprightness before us were enraptured

Indeed, the upright were enraptured before us,

by it, and grew intoxicated among creation, wandering in love.

By it, and so grew intoxicated amid creation, mad with love.

تراهم سكارى ينشر الجمع فهمهم

تراهم سكارى ينشر الجمع فهمهم

ويطويه نور الفرق في أبحر العمى

ويطويه نور الفرق في أبحر العمى

You see them drunk: mystical union unfolds their understanding,

You see them drunk: union unfolds their understanding,

while the light of distinction folds it away in seas of blindness.

And the light of separation folds it into seas of blindness.

ملأت لكم دَني شراباً مروقاً

ملأت لكم دَني شراباً مروقاً

وحركت أوتاري فأنطقت أعجما

وحركت أوتاري فأنطقت أعجما

I filled my wine jar for you with clarified wine,

I filled my wine-jar for you with clarified wine,

and plucked my strings, making the speechless speak.

And stirred my strings, making the speechless speak.

وغنيت في شرب هم الرسل كلهم

وغنيت في شرب هم الرسل كلهم

تقدم إلى باب المليك مقدما

تقدم إلى باب المليك مقدما

I sang among drinkers—they were the messengers, all of them.

And I sang among drinkers who were the messengers, all of them,

Advance to the Sovereign’s gate, boldly taking the lead.

Who advanced to the Sovereign's gate, accorded precedence.

من كمثلي وذا الشراب شرابي

من كمثلي وذا الشراب شرابي

والنبيون كلهم ندماني

والنبيون كلهم ندماني

Who among you is like me? This wine is my wine,

Who is like me, when this wine is my wine,

and all the prophets are my drinking companions.

And all the prophets are my drinking companions?

هام قبلي به الخليل وموسى

هام قبلي به الخليل وموسى

ثم عيسى وصاحب القرآنِ

ثم عيسى وصاحب القرآنِ

Before me, Abraham the Friend and Moses were enraptured by it,

The Friend of God and Moses were enraptured by it before me,

then Jesus and the Companion of the Qur’an.

Then Jesus and the bearer of the Qur'an.

هذه حالتي وهذا مَقامي

هذه حالتي وهذا مَقامي

فاعرفوني وانكروا عرفاني

فاعرفوني وانكروا عرفاني

This is my state, and this is my spiritual station:

This is my state, and this my station;

so recognize me, and deny my gnosis.

So recognize me, and deny my gnosis.

بنور وجهك يا نور السموات

بنور وجهك يا نور السموات

أشعل مصابيح عرفاني بمشكاتي

أشعل مصابيح عرفاني بمشكاتي

By the light of Your face, O Light of the heavens,

By the light of Your face, O Light of the heavens,

kindle the lamps of my gnosis within my niche.

واملأ بحبك قلبي واجتذب رمقي

واملأ بحبك قلبي واجتذب رمقي

من بين أبحر أوهامي وغفلاتي

من بين أبحر أوهامي وغفلاتي

Fill my heart with Your love, and draw my last breath

And fill my heart with Your love, and draw what life remains in me

from amid the seas of my illusions and heedlessness.

From amid the seas of my illusions and heedlessness.

هذه النار وذا الوادي المقدس

هذه النار وذا الوادي المقدس

فاخلع النعيلين والذلة فالبس

فاخلع النعيلين والذلة فالبس

Here is the fire, and here the sacred valley;

This is the fire, and this the sacred valley;

so remove both sandals, and put on humility.

So take off the two little sandals, and put on humility.

واجد أنت هدى أو قبساً

واجد أنت هدى أو قبساً

لا تجاوز أن هذا الليل عسعس

لا تجاوز أن هذا الليل عسعس

And you—find guidance or a firebrand.

You will find guidance or a firebrand;

Do not pass on, for this night has grown dark.

Go no farther, for this night has grown dark.

طرق اللّه نصبَ عيني واسرا

طرق اللّه نصبَ عيني واسرا

ر أساميه أبحري وسفيني

ر أساميه أبحري وسفيني

God’s paths are before my eyes, and the secre—

God's paths are before my eyes, and the secrets

—ts of His Names are my seas and my ships.

Of His names are my seas and my ships.

ما الذي صدني عن اللّه إلا

ما الذي صدني عن اللّه إلا

سوء أمارتي وسوء يقيني

سوء أمارتي وسوء يقيني

What has kept me from God except

What kept me from God except

the evil of my commanding self and the defect of my certainty?

The evil of my commanding soul and the weakness of my certainty?

رب غوثاه جلها ظلمات

رب غوثاه جلها ظلمات

بؤت فيها بصفقة المغبونِ

بؤت فيها بصفقة المغبونِ

Lord, help! Most of it is darknesses;

Lord, help! Most of it is darkness;

within them I incurred the bargain of one defrauded.

Within it, I came away with the bargain of one cheated.

أنت نور الأنوار نور يقيني

أنت نور الأنوار نور يقيني

في حياتي الدنيا بنور مبين

في حياتي الدنيا بنور مبين

You are the Light of lights, the light of my certainty

You are the Light of lights, the light of my certainty,

through my life in this world, with a manifest light.

In my earthly life, with a manifest light.
